200 Words on 'Toward a Theory of Architecture Machines'

The notions of Robotic architecture put forward in Nicholas Negroponte's 'toward a theory of architecture machines' play with the idea that machines come from and intelligent creator and they “perform well when told exactly how to do something”[1]. The paper looks at machines, not just as objects that can make architecture, but rather learn about architecture[2]. As it stands now, machines are used for the monotonous tasks of design, the real design is done by the human. Negroponte puts forward the dream of having a machine with soul (a true artificial intelligence) that can adapt to task which require more effort than reading scripts and code. The argument then continues on to discuss machines with human characteristics such as sight, he mentions a robot that wanders the city and has opinions of things (a mind of its own)[3]. In my opinion, these notions belong in a sci-fi movie, a thing that is not human will be unlikely to ever be able to carry out out tasks beyond those for which it was designed. The subjectivity of human nature is something that no algorithm can replicate in a machine, leave the design to the 'real' architect and may the machines make his life easier.

Week 10 Task- 300 words

For my final assignment I have decided to merge two of the subject areas together and focus on how robotic architecture can aid in the construction of a sustainable high-rise dynamic design. The keywords which will define my narrative will be based on the construction, sustainability and dynamic implementation of a highrise building based in a dense metropolis cbd. The video will entertain and inform, it will focus on portraying a contrast between old design and new sustainable thinking. I will try to come up with an interesting way in which robotics can be used in the construction of the building as well as the day-to-day functions of the building. My intention is to inform the viewers into the construction of the building as well as the building in action, this will contrast with the current decay of cities today. I will try to contrast the 'before and after' shots, I will use smog in the early shots which will then be taken away in the later ones as the new building is being created. Also, I intend to show behind the scenes footage and demonstrate the mastermind behind the robots. By showing a shot of the control station, viewers will be able to make the connection between the computer room and the construction process being carried out by the bots.

150 words on 'Set'

The concepts around the word 'set' can vary depending of the frame in which it is studied. To be able to physically place something in a position would be defined as 'setting' (verb) which differs from the notion of being aready 'set' in stone which is an adjective. An interesting thought would be to have an organised collection of objects. Without any relationships between members of the collection, the items are nothing, but if they have a similarity (eg. colour, size, purpose etc..) they suddenly become a 'set'. Another meaning which could be derived would be the idea of 'setting off' (verb) on a journey/path or to be 'set' on path. Finally, an idea of 'setting' or going back to an original state or 're-set'; going from liquid to solid, hot to cold, high to low or forward or backwards in time in a transition.
